What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a scientifically backed therapy originally developed to help people recover from trauma and PTSD. It works by helping your brain reprocess disturbing memories or limiting beliefs, so they no longer cause emotional distress.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements or tapping) to support your brain in safely integrating painful or stuck experiences. But it’s not just for trauma — many people use EMDR to address anxiety, fear, and deep-rooted patterns that are holding them back.


While EMDR is highly effective for trauma recovery, it is also used to treat:

  • Childhood emotional neglect or abuse
  • Panic attacks and anxiety disorders
  • Social anxiety and performance anxiety
  • Phobias and irrational fears
  • Low self-esteem and confidence issues
  • Perfectionism or imposter syndrome
  • Grief and complicated loss
  • Relationship challenges or attachment wounds
  • Medical trauma, birth trauma, or accidents
  • Feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness
  • Burnout or work-related stress


If there’s a memory, thought, or belief that triggers a strong emotional or physical reaction — even if you think “others had it worse” — EMDR may help you find relief and resolution.


How EMDR Therapy Works:

EMDR follows a structured process over several sessions. Here’s a general idea of what to expect:

  1. Initial Assessment – We explore your current struggles, history, and goals.
  2. Stabilisation & Preparation – I’ll guide you through grounding and calming techniques so you feel safe before we begin deeper work.
  3. Target Identification – We pinpoint the memories, feelings, or beliefs that are stuck and still affecting you today.
  4. Desensitisation – While you recall the issue, we use eye movements or tapping to help your brain process the distress and reduce its charge.
  5. Reprocessing & Integration – We replace the old belief (e.g., “I’m not good enough”) with something more empowering (e.g., “I’m safe now” or “I did my best”).

The entire process is collaborative, respectful, and at your pace. You are always in control.

About Me

Hi I'm Sinead

I’m a dedicated and compassionate Psychotherapist, Coach, and Mental Health Consultant with a special focus on trauma, anxiety, and emotional resilience. Fully accredited with the IACP, I provide EMDR therapy to adults across Ireland, the UK, and worldwide, helping them heal from past wounds and reconnect with their sense of self.


Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of clients—those carrying the weight of childhood trauma, struggling with low self-worth, stuck in cycles of anxiety, or simply feeling disconnected from their own lives. What I’ve seen again and again is this: with the right support, people can heal. EMDR is one of the most powerful tools I’ve used to help clients process deep pain and move forward with clarity and confidence.


My therapeutic approach is always person-centred and flexible. No two people are the same, and neither are their healing journeys. Whether you're seeking relief from trauma, anxiety, or old emotional patterns, I’ll meet you where you are and tailor the work to your pace and needs.


All sessions are offered online (via Zoom) so you can access support from wherever you feel most comfortable. Whether you're in Dublin, London, or somewhere else in the world, my virtual door is open.
