Teen Counselling - online teen counselling

Teen Counselling Online

Adolescence is a difficult time in a young persons life. Today's teens not only have to deal with body image issues, the loss of the child self and finding their place in society, they also have to deal with newer issues such as social media, online bullying, sexting, parent separation and increased choice. These can all evoke anxiety and depression. We work with teens and their parents to build communication, we understand the importance of the teen-parent relationship and how it is vital for the well-being of a teenager and so we ask that parents work with us to better understand the issue and help your teen. So in addition to working with the teen one-to-one, we also work with the parents.

When should a teenager see a therapist?

Teenagers face a range of emotional and mental health challenges as they navigate the complexities of adolescence. While it is normal for teens to experience stress, anxiety, and depression at times, persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, hopelessness, or changes in behaviour may indicate the need for professional help. A teenager may benefit from seeing a therapist if they are experiencing:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety or depression
  • Intense and prolonged mood swings
  • Difficulty with relationships and social interactions
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Substance abuse or addiction
  • Eating disorders or body image concerns
  • Trauma or abuse
  • Difficulty with attention, concentration, and academic performance
  • Chronic physical symptoms without a medical explanation
  • Unusual or problematic behaviours such as aggression, impulsiveness, or excessive risk-taking

It is important to note that seeking therapy is a personal decision, and each teenager may have their own reasons for seeking help. However, a therapist can provide a safe and non-judgmental space for teens to process their emotions, develop coping skills, and improve their mental health. If a teenager is struggling with their mental health, it is important for parents, guardians, and friends to offer support and encourage them to seek professional help.

Teen counselling is a type of therapy that can be beneficial for adolescents who are having emotional or mental health problems. Teen counselling may be helpful for a teen for a variety of reasons, some of which are as follows:

  • Persistent sadness, anxiety, or depression: Teen counselling can give a teenager the guidance and support they need to manage their emotions if they are feeling depressed, anxious, angry, tearful or irritable etc

  • Intense and prolonged mood swings: Adolescence is a time of intense emotional changes, but persistent mood swings can impact a teenager’s well-being and relationships. Teen counselling can help a teenager manage their emotions and improve their overall mood.

  • Difficulty with relationships and social interaction: Teenagers may have trouble making and keeping friends, or they may encounter bullying or social exclusion. Teen counseling can support in a teen's social development and relationship-building.

  • Thoughts about suicide or self-harm: It's important to get help right away if a teen is contemplating suicide or self-harm. Teen counseling can give them a secure and encouraging space in which to discuss their thoughts and feelings and learn coping mechanisms for managing their emotions.

  • Addiction or substance abuse: Addiction or substance abuse can have detrimental effects on a teenager's health and wellbeing. Teen counselling can support a teen in addressing their substance use and help them to develop healthy coping skills.

  • Eating Disorders and body image issues: Teenagers may struggle with issues related to their bodies and self-esteem, and some may even develop eating disorders. Teen counselling can encourage a teen in establishing a positive body image and a healthy relationship with food and eating.

  • Trauma or abuse: Teenagers who have been exposed to trauma or abuse may develop emotional and mental health difficulties. Teen counselling can offer them a secure and encouraging place to process their experiences and learn coping mechanisms.

For teenagers who are having emotional or mental health problems, teen counselling can be a helpful resource. Teenagers can improve their coping mechanisms, overall well-being, and relationships — with the correct guidance and tools. Consider teen counseling as a start toward enhancing your mental health whether you are a teen or the parent of a teen who is experiencing difficulties.
